KAYAKING ARTICLES

By: Dominick Greco
Fishing from a kayak is not hard. Being “boatless” does not have to be a handicap. Further more it can provide lessons in angling that you can take to the bank. Many pro fisherman like Gary Klein who has two B.A.S.S. Angler-Of-The-Year award, Started out fishing four to five days a week from the shore. Yes, most of us are not lucky enough to own their own boat, but catching fish with out one is easy. If you have a kayak, and my favorite is the Ocean Kayak Line-up!

Consider this California’s Gil Rowe holds the world record for the spotted bass with a 9-pound, 4-ounce fish. This was one of 60 spots weighing 5 pounds or more that he has landed from the shore. By wading or utilizing a float tube, a low profile will allow an angler to make casts well beneath the overhanging tree limbs or past walls of trees. These places can be impenetrable from the casts of the deck of a boat. In addition, the lack of mobility in fishing from the shore can force you to fish each cove and pocket more thoroughly than most anglers in boats.

These tips can further your success in many ways. Dress for success! Meaning I would suggest wearing Light or camouflage colored quick dry clothing to keep cool and avoid detection. Bass and other species of fish can be very skittish, when they see flashy colors and noise from an angler on the bank, kayak or boat. I also emphasize the need for quality-polarized sunglasses, because kayak fishing places a premium on being able to see what lies beneath the surface of the water.

Carry a light load, take only the most essential tackle and lures you will need, Loading yourself down limits the advantage of being mobile in your favorite body of water. The Ocean Kayak line-up, have very large storage areas, which allows one to carry more than enough fishing gear. Plus they can be outfitted with all kinds of fishing accessories. Use quality gear since kayak fishing limits the amount of tackle on hand; it is crucial that your equipment works properly. Most kayak anglers can benefit from using 61/2 to 7 feet long rods. In addition, reels with either a wide or a long-cast spool for maximum casting distance.

The most hindering thing I can think of for the kayak fisherman is the length of his cast. The farther you can cast in certain situations will dictate your success in finding fish. Be sure that you take the time to notice the clues the shoreline can yield. Like the type of baitfish that may frequent the shallows. This will help determine what the larger predators are feeding on. This can help you select the proper color scheme to match when selecting your bait. In addition, things like water clarity can also change the feeding habits of bass and other fish.

FISHING ARTICLES

Fishing success may determine the future of fishing. Success breeds enthusiasm and interest, while failure causes apathy. To sustain fishing requires many interested and informed anglers willing to fight to protect habitat and support local and state managed fisheries as well as abide to Fish and Game regulations.

Each fish species responds differently to its environment. This is nature’s way of assuring a natural order. Fish respond to a fisherman’s bait by using the following senses: smell, taste, touch, sight, and hearing.

By using these senses fish respond to stimuli and create their basic lifestyle, this is also somewhat determined by their genetic code. By genetic code, I mean each specific species whether it is Bass, Bluegill, Trout, or catfish are born knowing which role they should assume within their ecosystem.

Each species is different. So to catch fish consistently, you must fish for each species differently. Understanding the basic nature of each species of fish is the difference in catching fish and not catching fish consistently. Fish adjust their behavior on a daily basis according to weather, available forage. When fish are active and in a positive feeding mood, they respond to many baits and methods. Fish in a neutral mood are not actively feeding but can be tempted with a more selective approach. Fish in a negative mood generally do not feed and are spooky, jittery, and difficult to catch.

Gear selection: Rod action, lure weight, and the break strength of fishing line altars the effect of a bait or lure. Each month I will go over the proper gear needed for each technique.

Technique: Technique refers to depth, speed, action, and vibration. Any lure or bait fished at the right depth, speed, and action stands an excellent chance of being engulfed by a fish.

Well enough of why fish do what they do lets talk about getting them to bite the business end of your fishing pole. As promised in last months article here is this month’s top lure choice and technique.

My favorite lure choice for this time is Surface Plug. Surface plugs work especially well when fish are spawning or feeding in shallow water. However, they will sometimes draw fish up from the deep. Surface plugs are most effective at water temperatures of 60 degree’s or warmer. The water must be relatively calm; otherwise, fish do not to notice the action. They fall into the following categories:

Stickbaits – These long, slender, floating plugs lack lips or propellers. They have no built-in wobble, so the fisherman must supply the action.

Propbait – Similar to stickbaits, these lures have a propeller at both ends.

Crawler – A large face plate or wings on the sides make the lure crawl across the surface when retrieved steadily. Crawlers produce a plopping or gurgling sound.

Chugger – The indented face catches water when the plug is jerked across the surface, producing a popping or chugging noise. Some chuggers have a slow; swimming action when retrieved steadily.

When selecting a surface plug at your local tackle shop pick a few basic types and colors to start out with, chartreuse, red, white seem to do well for me.

The beauty of using surface plugs is anyone can tie one on, cast it out with a basic spincast rod and reel, and jerk it on top of the water. My favorite technique is using a surface plug (chugger) and casting out and letting it sit on top of the water until the ripples die in the water then I give it a little jerk again and wait for the ripples to die again. If nothing strikes after two or three jerks, cast to another spot.

Can you remember the first person ever to take you fishing? Moreover, how fun it was? I bet that person still holds a very special place in your heart. So get out, enjoy life, take a kid fishing, and be a special person in someone’s life.
